“Praxis is the frontier. It’s contemporary, bold and brazen—a suite of experiments in new-world winemaking. These wines are fresh and fruit-driven, destined for drinking in their youth with intensely flavoured dishes or at raucous social occasions.” – Moorilla

If you’re on the lookout for a vibrant Tasmanian wine that pushes boundaries, breaks the rules and is intended for drinking at a fun and raucous occasion, then look no further than the Praxis series of wines. Part of the Moorilla offering, the grapes used in Praxis wines are grown on the St Matthias vineyard, situated on the west bank of the Tamar River, fifteen kilometres north of Launceston. The climate, soil and location and proximity to the water means the grapes grown there are versatile with high acidity and very fruity flavours.

The Praxis series, developed from these fruit-driven flavours, is designed to be enjoyed straight away, or lightly cellared. Described as flirty and fun, each variation presents a multitude of flavours as outlined by Moorilla:

  • Praxis Sauvignon Blanc: As in the last few years the batches of Sauvignon Blanc that were found to be more fruit driven and closer to the mainstream Sauvignon blanc style were identified, blended and kept separate from the more complex Muse batches. The resulting wine shows aromatics ranging from grassy to mineral to tropical. This vintage again saw only stainless steel fermentations in order to keep its fresh character and will be ideal for early drinking within two years of the vintage.
  • Praxis Chardonnay Musqué: An unassuming colour gives little indication of the floral and fruit bomb about to ensue. Fresh linen, honeydew melon and jasmine lead the nose, followed swiftly by peach skin and lychee.  Silky textures and a firm, crisp acidity balance beautifully with the playful sweetness of the peach and sherbet.  Long after your last mouthful, this wine hints at a summer picnic in the garden.
  • Praxis Sparkling Riesling: The label depicts a bubblegum-coloured heart and makes no false promises—you’ll love this fun and flirty wine. With a soft but lively bead, expect wafts of lime and classic floral aromas to start. A hint of brioche adds to the generosity of this well-balanced wine, and while it’s got some creamier notes than previous vintages it hasn’t lost any of that signature zing. Finish your first glass and you’ll notice a hint of sweetness that’ll leave you wanting more (we told you it was flirty). Serve chilled, drink now. And then again tomorrow.
  • Praxis Pinot Noir: The pale ruby colour belies an impressively smooth, skilfully-structured wine with soft, sweet notes of red liquorice, lavender and hawthorn, balanced with some sour cherry and a hint of aniseed. An incredibly smooth, easy drinking Pinot—perfectly suited to consuming now or light cellaring.

Another intriguing highlight of the Praxis range is the distinctive label, developed using street art found around Melbourne and Hobart. As stated by Moorilla, “Like graffiti, these wines are not everyone’s cup of tea. They don’t fit neatly into the rules of the wine world—just as street art has traditionally gone unrecognised by authorised histories of art.”

Continuing on our celebrations of the Dark Mofo season, we are excited to offer the range of Praxis wines in our store on special this week at Salamanca Fresh, for a limited time.
